About

The MIXPAR project (MIXed PARadigms) focuses on creating and developing an extensive database of mixed perfective auxiliation systems in Italo-Romance dialects. Its main goal is to compile all the attested data documenting cases where the two auxiliaries — have and be — alternate within the same paradigm, giving rise to a variety of distinct distributional patterns.

This endeavour originated during the KREAS project (Creativity and Adaptability as Conditions of the Success of Europe in an Interrelated World, No. CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/16_019/0000734), funded by the Operational Programme Research, Development and Education (OP RDE)Excellent Research call, and carried out at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University between 2018 and 2022. The first outputs related to this research were published during this period.

MIXPAR is now being further developed thanks to funding from the Czech Science Foundation (GA ČR), grant no. 24-10205S, titled “The MIXPAR project: A quantitative approach to mixed perfective auxiliation systems in Italo-Romance”(2024–2026).

The support of both KREAS and GA ČR projects is gratefully acknowledged.

In its current version, the database covers a wide range of dialects and encodes several key dimensions of variation, represented by variables such as Form, Cell, Auxiliary, Dialect classification, and others. Each variable is accompanied by a discussion of the challenges encountered during annotation, including the treatment of ambiguous or borderline cases. The MIXPAR database aims to serve as a valuable resource for both descriptive and theoretical research. It contributes to the preservation of a unique aspect of Romance linguistic heritage and follows the standards of morphological lexicons for documenting inflectional paradigms (see, e.g., Paralex Standard).

A more detailed description of mixed paradigms and the database structure can be found in the section Mixed Paradigms.
